Hello Dan
Just wanted to let you know that I have discovered that Mary Elizabeth was
a widow when she married Alfred Chaston. I have discovered them both in the
1861 census, when they were working (and living) as draper's assistants at
Robert Sayle's department store at 12-15 St Andrews Street, Cambridge (this
is now owned by the John Lewis Partnership, which is a big department store
chain and only moved out of St Andrews Street last year.
There was a George White, aged 23, who died in Cambridge in 1866 and might
have been Mary's first husband - I am assuming that as she was born miles
away in Birmingham she was more likely to have come to Cambridge before or
during her marriage than after it (why would she?) - but I still have no
idea what her maiden name was.
Cheers
Sukie
